BIOTRAMUNTANA

Promotion of the bioeconomy for the conservation of biodiversity in the north of the Serra de Tramuntana

The Fundación Vida Silvestre Mediterránea (FVSM) and the Fundación General de la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares (FGUA) have started this year 2022, a pioneering and innovative project in the Serra de Tramuntana, in Mallorca, and which will last for just over 3 years, until the end of 2025.

The FVSM project has been selected, along with 13 more projects from other entities, from among 132 projects throughout Spain.

The main objectives of the project are:

  1. Communicate and disseminate through the dissemination of the main advances and items that are achieved as the project is executed.
  2. Expand the territory committed to the conservation of biodiversity and promote its bioeconomy products in local consumption networks.
  3. Generate added value to the products and services offered by the territory in custody by creating a raw material transformation center and adapting the facilities for the services.
  4. Improve water quality and prevent soil loss due to erosion on farms in custody with the introduction of biochar.
  5. Improve environmental conditions for bees and other pollinators in order to increase the yield of crop pollination and increase the quantities of bee products while contributing to the conservation of biodiversity in the north of the Serra de Tramuntana.
  6. Contribute to the conservation of biodiversity through bioindicator species, in the north of the Serra de Tramuntana, thus improving the bioeconomy of the region.

The scope of the project can be measured by the geographical delimitation where it is going to act: nine municipalities in the north of the Serra de Tramuntana (Sóller, Fornalutx, Escorca, Pollença, Bunyola, Alaró, Mancor de la Vall, Selva and Campanet) that occupy an area of 587,040 Ha, 4,528 Ha of them, in Custody of the Territory with the FVSM. In addition, all of them are located within the Serra de Tramuntana Nature Reserve, a regional protection figure in the Balearic Islands. The actions of the project foresee a long-term scope that generates a transformative change in the whole society of the island of Mallorca, for which strategic communication will be carried out through the media and the creation of a sustainable consumption network .

The Fundación Vida Silvestre Mediterránea (FVSM) is an entity with great experience in the conservation of vulnerable species and their habitats in the Serra de Tramuntana and promoter of the Custody of the Territory on the island, while the Fundación General Universidad de Alcalá (FGUA) it is a scientific entity that gives validity to the project and develops the actions of the project itself through personnel specialized in the environment. In this way, the FVSM’s experience in conservation work on the island is combined with the innovation and experimental development offered by the FGUA.

This project has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) in the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
